Frequently Asked Questions
What is Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas?
Habitat is a Christian housing ministry dedicated to providing decent, affordable housing to working families in Clark County.
How did Habitat begin?
Millard Fuller was a very successful attorney in Georgia who felt it was a shame that a working family in the richest country in the world could not afford to own a home. He and his wife Linda sold everything and started Habitat for Humanity in 1976.
How do I qualify for a house?
Families are selected based on their need for adequate shelter, their ability to pay back a no-interest loan and their willingness to partner. For a complete listing of qualifications, please click here.
Are the houses given to the families?
No. Habitat houses are sold to selected partner families. Each family is required to pay closing costs and then continue to make a monthly mortgage payment for the duration of the loan. The houses are kept affordable because no-interest is charged and Habitat does not make a profit.
In addition to this, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor – sweat equity – into building their Habitat house and houses of others.
Does Habitat rent homes?
No, Habitat “homeowner families” are just that – owners of their homes.
How do the houses get built?
Individual volunteers, faith groups, businesses and civic groups work under professional supervision alongside Habitat families to build homes.
How can I volunteer?
You need to first register on our website as a volunteer. Once that has been done you will receive email updates regarding upcoming volunteer opportunities. To register, please click here.
How can I set up a group volunteer build day?
Group volunteers make up the majority of the volunteers at the construction site. We host groups Tuesdays – Saturdays with Saturdays being our busiest day. Build days fill up extremely fast. To find out more information on scheduling a build day for your group, please click here.
Where does the money to construct the homes come from?
Tax-deductible donations from individuals, corporations, churches and foundations. We do not use government money to build homes, but will accept government funding to purchase land, offset permit fees or for any required off-site improvements.
Where do we build?
Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas builds in Clark County. Nevada. This includes Henderson, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas.
Does Habitat rehab homes?
While many other Habitat affiliates do rehab homes, the Las Vegas chapter does not at this time.
What is done with the money paid to Habitat through the partner families’ mortgages?
The mortgage payments received by Habitat are used to help build more local Habitat homes.
